"Electricity Safety Program"
by Sara

Recently two employees from WPS (Wisconsin Public Service) came to do a safety electricity program for our class and another sixth grade class. They showed us what to do in various electrical problems. They brought in mini models of scenes where people could be seriously injured in electricity related problems. I think everybody learned a lot from their demonstration.

Winter Fun Night
Reported by Laura and Anna

AnnaLaura.JPG (70985 bytes)

Winter fun night was held on Tuesday the 12 of January at Iverson Park. It was exactly what the name says it is. The toboggan hill, the skating rink and the sledding hills where open. While everyone else were sledding most of the sixth graders were having a rowdy snowball fight. Mostly everyone who played got at least one facewash or a snowball thrown at them.

The warming house provided an escape from the cold. In it, the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) served hot cocoa. A lot of the adults spent most of the time in there.

Some boys who went to it answered our question "Was it fun?"

With the response of, "Well duh! of course it was fun!"

Winter fun night, I think, was a big success. I think everyone agrees with me.

Do you want to know what is happening in our class? Check down below and find out about the neat classroom stuff that we are currently doing!

WRITING
Right now in writing we are still kind of finishing up our stories, and we are writing word poems. It is the end of the second quarter, so we will be starting new stuff soon!

 SCIENCE
In science we are leaning about the circulatory system. We are learning all about the heart, blood, blood vessels, and all that bloody stuff. We got to look at and touch a deer heart! It was really really neat!

 SOCIAL STUDIES
In social studies we are learning about the struggle for independence. We are learning about Paul Revere, big battles, and all that warish stuff.

The 6th graders at Washington School are going to put on the musical "Tom Sawyer" in March. We will start learning about it in December and get the parts. Tryouts will be held in January. As more information comes we will inform you.

7Keyboarding7
by Loren

On Tuesday we started keyboarding. It's not our favorite subject, but it's not that bad. We work for a simulated "company" called International Computers Unlimited, ICU for short. We work out of books that tell us what to type. Then, at the end of the period, we record how many lines we typed. The average is about 25 lines, but some people get 50 lines or more! It going to go until Christmas break, which is the 23rd.

Student Council Report
by Luke
Lukeflag.JPG (2884 bytes)

In student council, we just completed the trick-or-treat for Unicef project.  $1192.53!  All the proceeds go to needy kids around the world!  The class that raised the most money per student for grades 1-2,3-4, and 5-6 got popsicles.  For 1-2 Mrs. Bancker won, in 3-4 Mrs. Pualson won, and in 5-6 Mr. Gonske won.  We started selling Y-Ties, which are curly shoe laces.  You don't need to tie them.  Just $3.00 a pair.   That's all the student council news for today!

Cadets
by Brian

Washington elementary School has a group of kids that are devoted to the school's students.  They are members of the School Safety Patrol.  Mrs. Behnke's class has two co-captains:  Brian is a co-captain of A Squad, and Sally of B Squad.  both Sally and Brian are Second-year Cadets.   The squad is primarily composed of 6th grade students but a handful of 5th grade students are required to join the squad to make it complete.  It is common to have one captain and one lieutenant to assist him/her.  Washington  School has deleted the lieutenant position and so there are two captains per squad.  The squads alternate duty times by weeks.  Students that are on partrol must be on their post by 8:45 to 9:00 AM, and on again at 3:30 - 3:45.  If they are a Cadet whose post has noontime duty, they eat early and are on their post by 12:10 PM.  If a cadet is unable to perform his/her duty on a certain date, he/she must find a replacement.   Washington School is trying out a new system this year.
