July: Board Meeting August: General Membership meeting September: Co-sponsored with PTO Council a community forum featuring The Institute for Wisconsins Future program on "School Funding." National Wellness Institute provided membership brochures to be passed out to all district students. Copps Corporation agreed to sponsor PTSA web site. Four computers donated to Tommye Leafgrens First grade class. October: Joint meeting with PTO Council. Four computers donated to Kathy Martins First Grade class. Four computers donated to Roosevelt School. November: Joint meeting with PTO Council. Approved resolution in support of elementary facility needs. PTSA web site recognized in Our Children magazine. December: January: Board meeting. Co-sponsored with PTO Council and League of Womens Voters, community forum on the impact of revenue caps on the Stevens Point Schools, entitled "School Funding Everybodys business". President attended State PTA Legislative Conference. PTSA sent 31 Reflections entries to the state. Four computers donated to Jan Hermans Sixth grade class at Madison. February: Joint meeting with PTO Council. Passed position statement asking the school board to hold a referendum to improved school facilities and obtain additional funding for the operating budget. PTSA register developed to communicate electronically with individual in the community interested in school issues. Four computers donated to Madison, Plover/Whiting, and Kennedy Schools. March: Presented position statement on the need for a referendum to the school board. Co-sponsored a Gifted and Talented parents meeting with the districts G/T Advisory Committee. Two computers donated to Mrs. Behnke at Washington School. April: Two members testified at the State Legislators Joint Financing Committees Public Hearing opposing high stakes testing, and the state revenue limits. One member testified at the State Assembly Education Committees Public hearing opposing high stakes testing and revenue limits. PTSA board meeting. Joint meeting with PTO Council. President participated in community program on W2 and Child Care. Two members attended the State PTA Convention. Committee Reports Membership: Membership total stand at 65 as of 4-26-99. There are 18 active, 1 business and 46 basic memberships. The PTSA received both national and state recognition certificates for our increase in membership from last year. Legislative: The PTSA was very active on the legislative front this year. One member attended the State Legislative Conference and met with representatives from both the senate and assembly education committees. Two community wide forums were sponsored on Wisconsin School funding. Members testified at two legislative public hearings on education needs. The PTSA belongs to a pk12 listserve to receive the latest state information on education issues. Finally the PTSA participated in a community forum on W2 and its impact on childcare in Portage County. Reflections: There were 31 entries in this years Reflection Program: 1 intermediate music, 1 senior music, 3 intermediate literature, 4 junior/middle literature, 2 senior literature, 1 primary visual arts, 7 intermediate visual arts, 4 junior/middle visual arts and 7 senior visual arts. There were five entries selected as State honors: 3 senior visual arts, 2 senior literature. There was one senior music entry selected as State High Honor. Four families were able to attend the state awards ceremony. Technology: Old University 386 machines were given out to every elementary school. Not all mini labs are functioning. District technology staff decided not to work on any of these old machines. Labs are working at Jackson, Washington, and Jefferson. The committee will try to work with the teachers who have the machines to get them functioning. Bill Hettler is still working with UWSP surplus supplies to negotiate better quality machines for the PTSA to donate to public schools.
Gifted and Talented: The committee sent out a survey to parents identified as having G/T children, at the end of last years school year. Web pages on gifted and talented education have been created for the PTSA web pages. A parents forum was held to gather feedback from parents on how well their childs/children needs are being met. An additional survey is to be distributed before the end of this school year. The results of this survey will be the focus of the next parents meeting.
