Stevens Point PTSA and Area PTO Minutes Present: Wendy Berg, Chris Derezinski, Kris Reineck, Judy Pflugradt, Ed Morganroth Jr., Carol Weston, Barb Ruesch, Renae Shibley, Michele Bjella, Sue Kubley, Jack Allgaier, Sandy Moore, Jane Schumaker, Julie Schneider, Kim Shirek, Shirley Winters and Jill Giddings. Meeting commenced at 7:05pm. PTO minutes were unanimously approved. PTSA minutes were unanimously approved. PTO treasurer reported a balance of $362.20. Report was approved. PTSA treasurer reported a balance of $3070.23. Report was approved. Ø PTSA dues are due. Ø A discussion about combining PTO and PTSA was tabled until after the referendum. Ø Michele Bjella volunteered to be PTSA Secretary. Ø Emery Babcock invited parents to be on the Advisory Council. Judy Pflugradt and Carol Weston agreed to represent parents on the Advisory Council. It meets every Monday from 1-3pm. Principals, department assistants and parents attend. Topics of discussion include: Census 2000, safety issues, early release programs and the referendum. Suggestions for topics of discussion for PTO/PTSA: setting up a district foundation so that companies would be able to donate to the district and corporate sponsorship in the schools. These discussions will be held after the referendum. PTSA
Committee Reports Gifted and Talented: The district staff is doing more for Gifted and Talented than in the past. Our district doesn’t meet the state mandate for Gifted and Talented. There are 3 teachers in the Nova Program to teach 6 grades. 1 part time teacher covers the other 300 students that are Gifted and Talented. The district doesn’t have enough to fund other programs. An outsider will be brought in to study what to do. Technology: Many refurbished computers from the University were installed in computer labs around the district. Every school has a technology plan. Each school gets about $8,000 to spend. Reflections: Patty Noel and Michelle Bjella will work on this project. School Board Report Ø It was suggested that at the junior high level Art, Music, Tech Ed etc. be academic electives. It would give the students an opportunity to do in depth studies. Ø There is a Mentor program that could be utilized a lot more. The mentors come from the community. Ø The SPASH student council representative mentioned that the high school students are calling the referendum “the closed campus referendum”. Ø The Student Wisconsin Education Association has 400 teachers in training that are looking for opportunities to teach. $1000 Referendum Ø $2619 Total The PTSA budget was approved. The next meeting will be on November 16, 1999 at Washington School at 7:00pm. The meeting was adjourned at 8:37pm.
