MINUTES-- PTSA Board Meeting

August 27, 1998

12:00 - 1:30 p.m.

National Wellness Institute Board Room

Welcome and Introductions

    The meeting was called to order by President Carol Weston at 1:05 p.m.

    Those present: Linda Chapin, Bill Hettler, Carol Weston, Colette Swiech, Randy Peelen, Susan Zach (secretary)

Approval of Minutes

Treasurer’s Report

    Balance on hand: $l,161.47

PTSA Information/Resources

    1. Environmental Awareness Grants: Carol will E-mail principals regarding this
    2. KIDS Vote Program
    3. Adopt-a-Lake Program
    4. "Parents’ Guide to the Information Super-Highway. " This booklet is available for $3.00 from PTSA.
    5. Leadership Conference, September 11 and 12 in Wausau.

By-Laws: will need to update by June 1999

 

Stevens Point Arts Council

    Donation request – declined.  Carol will send a letter saying that  PTSA is investing in the arts at this time through the Reflections Program.

1998 – 1999 Budget

    After some discussion of preliminary budget categories, a motion was made to keep the $300.00 slated for operations (supplies, mailing, duplicating) and the $200.00 for the Reflections Program, but to get input from the membership-at-large on their budget priorities before approving the budget (Hettler, Zach). Motion carried.

PTO Council Confab

                           ("gathering") will meet August 27 to discuss topics and plans for the year.

Topic for the first meeting on September 29 will be "School Funding" by someone from the Institute for Wisconsin’s Future. Public Library, Pinery Room, 7:00 p.m., public invited. Carol will check to see if CA3 can videotape and re-broadcast the session. Motion to go ahead with planning for this speaker carried

Reflections Program.  

Barbara Minges, teacher at the Conservatory for Creative Expressions, will

chair, with help from Marcia Yockers in the beginning. Deadline for submissions is mid-January.

Someone from PTSA should meet with art, music and writing coordinators in the district to

promote this contest..

Teacher of theYear Award. General membership will decide if we will do this this year.

Technology Committee Report. PTSA Web Page funded for a year by Copps Corp. The address

            will be PTSA.ORG.

Membership Renewal and Outreach   . Bill proposed a membership campaign for PTSA this year.

There would be 4 levels of membership:

1) Basic: $3.00 (none of this goes to local PTSA)

2) Active membership: $20.00, which would include $3.00 fee plus magazine "Our Children,"

3) $40.00, which would include $3.00 fee, magazine, and a personal web site on the PTSA Web Page. PTSA (Randy and Bill) would offer several free training workshops on how to develop a web page to those who donate at this level.

4)  $100.00 business membership would include $3.00 fee, magazine, and a personal web site on the PTSA Web Page. PTSA (Randy and Bill) would offer several free training workshops on how to develop a web page to those who donate at this level.

Motion carried unanimously to have Bill develop a membership form with these four levels. He will have it for the PTO Council Confab later today.

Twenty used computers  were purchased this past spring for $100.00 by PTSA from UWSP.  

Bill,  his son John, Laura and Vince Wachowiak have been working (successfully) on getting some (8 so far) of them up and running. They are available by request for any school in the district, grades K-2. The computers are AT&T 386, 18 large and 2 small.

School Voucher Resolution. Questions was whether PTSA will go on record opposing. After considerable discussion, the issue was tabled. PTSA will continue to study the issue.
