Joint PTSA – PTO Council Meeting
Jackson School

Those present: Jill Giddings, Judy Pflugradt, Kris Reineck, Barb Ruesch, Sandy VonHoldt, Susan Zach, Sue Clark Kubley, Colette Swiech, Denise Brennecke, Sharon Violette, Carl Coffman, Michele Bjella, Randy Peelen, Marilyn Cornwell, Susan Zach (secretary)

  1. Minutes of February and March meetings accepted as written.
  2. Treasurer’s report: PTSA balance on hand - $2,989.01
  3. PTO Council balance on hand - $375.20

    Reports accepted ( Pflugradt, Reineck; unanimous)

  4. Correspondence
    1. Up-date on bills to revise legislation on testing of state standards, received from Whitefish Bay grass roots group.
    2. Child and Family Advocacy conference, July 12-16
    3. Awards received for membership increase in Stevens Point PTSA from state and national PTSA.
    4. Russian language teaching position advertised for $43,000. The district will continue to pay .6 of this position; funds for the remaining .4 could come from teaching adult evening classes at the Technical School. This position was created in 1991 for a teacher from Rostov Veliky, Stevens Point’s sister city, to come to teach at the high school and to foster the official relationship between the two cities.
    5. Joyce Epstein will speak on parent involvement in schools on June 21 and 22 in Middleton. Would be good if teams from the PTOs would go.

IV. By-laws Revisions accepted as written (Peelen, Giddings; unanimous).

V Board Report

    1. State PTSA conference, which Carol and Bill attended. Resolutions were passed on indoor air pollution, pesticides around schools, lifting the revenue cap, and accountability of public funded education, including testing for private schools.
    2. State PTSA Leadership Conference September 10 and 11 in Brookfield. Stevens Point PTSA would help pay for registration and room for any member(s) wishing to attend.
    3. State PTSA has several $500.00 grants available. A grant for a parent involvement project could be written. Due May 12.
    4. Stevens Point PTSA will bestow honorary life time PTSA memberships on
    5. two dedicated teachers, Sue Hall and Santha Bickford. (Ruesch, Cornwell; unanimous). Susan and Carol will meet to clarify criteria and process by which future teachers will be nominated.

    6. It was pointed out that Carol and Barb Ruesch did a fine job presenting at

McDill School last month concerning the financial status of the school district.

  1. Committee Reports and Year End Report
  2. Committee reports on membership, legislation, Reflections, technology, and G/T

    were handed out and filed

  3. PTSA officers for next year: Carol, Randy, Colette will remain as president, vice-president and treasurer. Volunteers for secretary are welcome to step forward!
  4. PTO Council: Carol will no longer act as president. Many council reps will be

    moving on (hopefully becoming active in the parent advisories at the junior highs). It is important to recruit reps at your schools NOW! Reps will vote next

    year for Council president.

  5. Referendum Action Plan. The School Board will hold two meetings which PTA
  6. and PTO members should attend.:

    May 10 – on agenda is the issue of holding a referendum to exceed revenue caps

    (Michele, Randy, League of Women Voters, business owners)

    May 11 – meeting to discuss facilities needs and whether or not to hold a referendum to fund them.

  7. Topics for future meetings were suggested:
    1. John Zellmer, Principal at Kennedy School, expert on retention.
    2. Mike Bubla, curriculum coordinator, on how our district is meeting state standards.
    3. Prevention of school violence.
