PRESENTATION: Pam Bork, principal of Jefferson school presented on the 21st Century Learning Grant received in February. Pam authored the grant, in which $462,000.00 will be received from the federal government to fund after school programming at Jefferson and Madison schools. This one year grant will provide capital expenditures including $50,000 in Technology materials for the building, snowshoes and igloo makers to be housed at Boston school Forest (for the use of children across the district), and transportation needs and tutoring for 36 children identifies as academically at risk. One year was spent in the planning. Pam emphasized that while Jefferson had many clubs and after school opportunities, staffed by community volunteers in place, this grant will be used to put things in place that can be carried on over time, after the grant monies are utilized. Mrs. Bork talked about the difficulties of a grant program – and indicated that they are not a solution to our everyday problems. Nonetheless, she shared that there are grant funds out there to be had to provide opportunities that otherwise would not be available and she is proud of the work and achievements as a result of the grant award. She will have the support of 14 community people working with her to construct the grant proposal. Pam is currently rewriting the grant for future submission, in conjunction with her new school administrative assignment. GIFTED AND TALENTED ADVISORY
COMMITTEE: Bill reported that there is a review currently being conducted
in which parents and teachers are being interviewed about existing GT
programs in grades 1 – 6. They are being asked what is in place and what
is still needed. A survey of all parents has already been completed. TECHNOLOGY: Bill Hettler announced no formal report. There was brief discussion on the need for schools communicating with each other through technology and curriculum needs being teacher driven, thus resulting in technology systems being present in a few classrooms with many inconsistencies. NATIONAL P.T.S.A. CONVENTION: Carol announced that the convention will be held this June 24 through the 26th in Chicago. Forms are available and some funding of entry fees has been budgeted through PTSA for members who wish to attend. Please contact Carol is you wish to attend or are interested in more information. STATE PTSA CONVENTION: This will be held in Appleton from May 4 – May 6. REFERENDUM UPDATE: Carol announced the upcoming round table discussion sponsored by the Board of Education to look at what we as a community want to see as a package for the upcoming referendum. The League of Women voters has offered to staff tables to register voters at our local schools. They may need help to staff this. Please go back to your schools and ask for volunteers. NOMINATIONS: The following nominations were made and accepted for 2000-2001 PTSA offices: Bill Hettler for President, Wendy Berg for Vice president, Colette Swiech for treasurer and Michele Bjella for Secretary. P.T.O. COUNCIL STATUS: Discussion on how to proceed with the PTO Council status, as the council has not had adequate representation over the year. While one member thought perhaps we could connect though Email, others raised the importance of having a member from each school representing it and being a recognized name associated with each school. Barb Ruesch indicated that the Board looks to the Council as an important group providing parent input. Equity between schools and the challenges that various PTOs experience in their ability to pay for activities needed by their schools was discussed. The decision to continue as a merged P.T.O./P.T.S.A. was suggested, to be revisited at the April meeting date. Next P.T.S.A/Council meeting will be April 3, 7 p.m.at McDill School Respectfully submitted – Michele Bjella March 23, 2000
