PTSA
BOARD MEETING
April 6, 1999
National Wellness Institute
Present: Carol Weston, Bill Hettler, Sue Kubly, Susan Zach (secretary), Colette Swiech
(treasurer).
- Correspondence
- "Impact of Wisconsin Works (W-2)" conference, April 22
- State Joint Finance Committee Hearing, April 13 at UW-SP
Susan and Carol will represent the Stevens Point PTSA and will testify
on the state high school graduation test, on limits on referendums, and
on lifting school district revenue caps. Our positions on these issues
reflect the position of the state PTA.
- Information from the Advocates for Education, a grassroots group opposed
to using the state test as the sole criterion for graduation, will be sent to all PTO
chairs.
- Our PTSA learned it has received, for the second year in a row, the
State and National PTA Increase Award for a 10% increase in our membership.
- Treasurers Report current balance of $1,723.01.
- The Board voted to allocate up to $200.00 for one or more PTSA members to attend the
State PTA Convention in Oconomowac April 23-24. Bill Hettler and Carol Weston plan to
attend, but on their own funds.
- Gifted and Talented Committee Report: a district survey will be done
this spring of parents of all gifted children in the district. Bill and Randy Peelen are
helping write the survey. Questions will be written so as to inform parents as well as
survey them.
The Board voted to pay for child care at the next PTSA G-T meeting.
- School Board Referendum Committee has apparently not met yet. The Board
felt it was important to maintain a presence at school board and finance committee
meetings to encourage them to move on the issue of holding referenda to 1)exceed the
revenue cap, and 2) construction.
- By-Laws review: Board reviewed changes, which will be voted on at April
28 meeting.
- New Business
1. Community Technology Grant (Department of Education). Carol would like to see our
community apply for this, a joint effort by PTSA, the school district and UWSP ( a
"tech co-op") to develop community technology centers. Bill will talk to Healthy
People, a Portage County HHS organization, to see if he can get them involved.
- Board approved two Life-long PTA memberships awards. Nominated were
Santha Bickford and Sue Hall (Bill motioned, Susan seconded; unanimous). These awards
($100.00 each) will be made yearly to outstanding teachers in our district who inspire
students through their creativity, enthusiasm and dedication. Nominations will be taken
throughout the year for the year 2000 award(s).
- PTSA Vision Statement. The Board feels that the Stevens Point district should be
somewhere above average on per pupil spending so that it can not only maintain quality
programs but also innovate so that it will stay competitive with other districts in the
state and nation. Bill will work to refine his ideas in a draft Vision Statement for the
PTA members to review.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING: Wednesday, April 28, 6:30 p.m. at Jackson School
