Minutes of the P.T.S.A. Executive
Board – Stevens Point Chapter Welcomes and introductions were made. The treasurer’s report was approved. Violence Prevention: President Carol Weston described the PTSA program on violence prevention, which includes Internet websites. Bill Hettler suggested that we send the information on to each principal with an introductory cover letter. Referendum: New brochures showcasing the May referendum have been developed for distribution. Carol also shared information from those opposed to the upcoming referendum that wish a second high school, which could include 40 classrooms, a 500 seat cafeteria, physical education complex, baseball field, etc. equivalent to 100,000 square feet. She suggested that we keep abreast of the issues and continue to be a resource and provide factual information to the community. Future planning for the upcoming year: The group reviewed the draft proposal to maintain our combined PTSA and Council meetings, which would include PTO representatives for the 2000-2001 school year. This would give parents a chance to see if there is interest in maintaining a fully functioning Council to work hand in hand with the PTSA and to maintain the valuable exchange of information in our district that has occurred over these last few years. The proposal includes provisions for deciding whether to disband or have PTO Council remain dormant if there is still no officer board for the Council by January 2001. Discussion followed about the continued need for parent involvement and parent involvement training, as well as looking at school standards. Judy Pflugradt projected that if the referendum passes, PTSA would be vitally important in the follow-up to insure that parents participate in decision making for referendum compliance. It was felt that we should continue to work with principals from less active schools to help get officers aware of and involved in the Council. Bill Hettler and Ed Morganrath planned to make contacts. Bill requested that all Board minutes be posted on the PTSA website in order to reach out to the school community. The next meeting of the PTSA Board was scheduled for August 25, 2000 at 12:00 p.m. at the Wellness Institute, 1300 College Court, Stevens Point. Respectfully submitted by Michele Bjella
