Medieval Times

The  Medieval Times is the times from the fall of the Roman empire through the beginnings of the Renaissance.  The times of  castles and kingdoms.  There were different kinds of kingdoms in different countries.  Charlemagne (pronounced sharlamain) was one of  the most  important of  all  kings.  He was a king of  France.  Lancelot is the most famous of all knights. He was a knight of the round table.

The  village was ruled and controlled by the lord of the manor.  A village usually  had three fields.  The  villagers grew wheat the first year, then they planted barley the next year, and then they left the field unplanted.  After that it will grow wheat, like
a cycle.

Most roofs in a village were made out of  straw or reeds (in other words, "thatch").  When villagers lost an animal, the animals were  put into a pound.  When their owners found them in the pound, before the animals could get out, the owner had to pay a fine.  Every house, unless it had a chimney, had a small hole in the roof (it allowed the smoke to come out) called a "smokehole". The church was a very important part of the village.  The church helped make rules for people to live by.  One rule the church had was that people in a village  should always eat fish on Fridays.
